Over The Counter Drugs (OTC) are the drugs that do not need a prescription and can be available easily at the pharmacists. It is vital to have a clear understanding about the meaning of an OTC drug and the drugs that come under this category. It is generally available for those disorders that are quite common.
Their benefits outweigh their counter affects and they are approved by the FDA (Food And DRUG Administration). The FDA also recommends the intake of OTC products analyzing the fact that it is available for various disorders that we experience in our day to day life and where visiting a doctor would not be necessary. Be it acne or the various drugs that we consume to lose weight, FDA administers them properly and concludes that there are around 80 such drugs in the OTC category. Here the chances that it would be misused are quite low.
Labeling sees to it that this drug is taken in a precautious way .This means that the labeling is adequately done and that the safety conditions and precautions are not ignored. The” OTC Drug Fact Label Regulation “that was passed in 1999 made it compulsory for the manufacturers to have the necessary information printed that was relaxed previously. The warnings and dosage conditions are also to be printed in a way that it is easily visible to one’s eyes. Considering the fact that it is difficult for a common man to understand the jargons in the labeling, the FDA has also made it clear that it should be written in a language that is easy for a layman to understand. Other necessary conditions including whether is advisable for pregnant women and infants to consume it must also be mentioned without fail.
Over The Counter Drugs (OTC)are advisable when the medicine can be given on the self-diagnosis basis i.e. where the consumer is able to diagnose the illness and the ailment that he requires.
